: to try to understand why things are the way they are. For example, 'most' people were anti the Vietnam war ( our youth - remember it?) but the war went on until the US were forced to admit defeat. I think that governments generally do what is in the generak population interest and they have the means to execute - e.g. slaughter the inconvenient native Americans - while the majority luxuriate in hand wringing and try to distance themselves. Once in powere they can't help exploiting the lack of interest and inertia in most of the populace - most have more passion for football and celebrity watching than their partners, let alone foreign policy. This bb is a good example. People polarise between extremes and that's the end of it. No discussion. They just aren't interested in reviewing their opinions.
: As far as i can see, we had to support the US in Iraq due to historical ties and economic real politic, TB sincerely believed he was doing the right thing, someone more experienced, older perhaps, might have believed different but would still have had to support our closest ally - how could we have done otherwise. TB should have put it this way to lumpenproles and they would have gone along with it. A football simile might have helped even!
